Val had seven missed calls when she checked her phone during her lunch break. One was a call from Mike saying he had the new tire and to come over anytime to get it installed. Hoping he could squeeze her in during her break, she grabbed her lunch and headed to her car. She still hadn’t filed a police report about the vandalism to her tire. She told herself it was because she’d been busy, but she knew it wasn’t that.

The sky overhead was bright blue with clouds as white as cotton, great big shapes drifting overhead. A car horn honked out of sight down Main, coming from the direction of the protest. Val nibbled on a cheese round and ran through the rest of her voicemail as she crossed the parking lot.

Two messages were from divorce lawyers she’d reached out to after her call with Gina. She was narrowing her options, trying to find someone who seemed not only competent, but aggressive enough to take on Jordan’s lawyers.

The rest of the calls were from reporters looking for interviews.

Becca Sheffield—the reporter who had followed them to Goldendale—had left a message, another in a long line of invitations to set the record straight by giving an exclusive interview. The other three were from news agencies wanting the same thing.

Val deleted them all.

Nearing her car, she slowed down. Something was on her windshield, the shadow of it visible as she approached from the rear. She glanced at the other cars in the parking lot, expecting to see a flier for a local business, but the other windshields were clear.

She rounded the front of her Prius to get a better look. It was a small yellow mailing envelope, tucked under her driver’s side windshield wiper, with an adhesive label affixed to the front. She slipped it out from under the wiper blade and glanced around, half expecting to see who had left it, but the parking lot was empty.

VALERIE FISHER was typed out in all caps.

Val’s appetite vanished, replaced with a feeling of dread. What now?

She slipped her finger under the flap and tore it open, then slid out the contents.

They were photos, just simple 4x6’s that could have been printed at the Walmart or Walgreens in Pineview. The first showed a picture of the Owl Creek Elementary School, with kids and parents milling around in the organized chaos of after-school pick-up.

The second was zoomed in on one particular child. Val immediately recognized Abby’s teal backpack and blond ponytail.

Her stomach dropped.

The next was of Abby walking up the sidewalk to Eileen’s house.

Abby was wearing different clothes, so it had been taken on a different day.

There was even one of Abby playing on the playground during recess.

Val’s mind raced, trying to make sense of it. She searched the envelope, looking for some note of explanation. The skin on the back of her neck prickled with the sensation of being watched. She spun around and scanned the surrounding trees and buildings, but she was alone.

With shaking hands, she shoved the pictures back in the envelope and unlocked her car.
